When You Need to Mentally Escape in New York City, Do These Things

Sometimes we don’t have great days. Today for example – the day after finding out who our next President of the United States is going to be for four straight years. But there are a bunch of other times living in New York just GETS TO YOU, and you need a breather. Next time that happens, do these things:

Eat a bunch of food:

Seamless is a great option. But so is exploring a new NYC neighborhood and noshing on flavors that transport you.

Time for a trip:

Canada seems like a good option right about now. Maybe you can make it an extended stay (ahem, for like four years).

Shake it off:

These are the best places to dance in New York.

Meditate:

The Akasha meditation app helps you clear your mind, focusing on love, creativity, success, productivity, and harmony and balance.

Go on an alone walk:

It’s not about looking at your phone or chatting with anyone. Be alone. Listen to music or just the sounds around you. Observe. I recommend a walk down the Hudson River Greenway.

Wine date with a close friend:

Lots and lots and lots of wine.

Get lost in art:

You don’t even have to spend money – check out museum free days/hours and just go. Get lost in the art.

Cooking class:

The Brooklyn Kitchen is the perfect place to escape. Put your thoughts toward chopping and stirring and tasting.

Try to Laugh:

Time for a comedy show. The Stand is one of my favorite places to go for good comedy. UCB is great for last minute, more affordable options.

Staycation:

Escape without really leaving. Citizen M is a super cool hotel I love right now, with a rooftop, delicious food and super cool lobby. Stay there for as long as you’d like.

Seek professional assistance:

On a serious note, when you feel like you need some help or someone to talk to, NYC Well is your connection to free, confidential mental health support. Speak to a counselor via phone, text or chat and get access to mental health and substance misuse services, in more than 200 languages, 24/7/365.

Talkspace is a NYC startup that’s giving people an option to use video chatting, texting, and other online methods for therapy. Another great option! Download the app on iOS or Android.
